“I work almost exclusively in pastels, and I love the idea of capturing light and how it illuminates my subjects, especially wildlife. But I wanted to distinguish my paintings from other wildlife artists, so I use various ephemera—like vintage national park and state maps, ads, and fishing licenses—as the paintings’ backgrounds. The maps can add color to the paintings, but also a lot to their stories.”
